Johnny Higdon serves as Membership Chair and President of Atlanta, GA Chapter 5 of the National Montford Point Marine Association® Inc. A native of Thomasville, Georgia, he devoted 30 years to the United States Marine Corps, culminating in his service as Installation Sergeant Major of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia.

Following his retirement in 2019, Johnny founded Legacy Building Mentors Incorporated, a nonprofit serving underserved communities, and established Quez-Essential Consulting to help organizations strengthen leadership and workforce performance. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information System Management and a master’s degree in Computer and Information Security.

Since becoming Chapter President in 2021, Johnny has expanded community engagement, modernized the Chapter’s website and membership processes, and created opportunities to share the firsthand experiences of Original Montford Point Marines. His leadership helped identify more than 12 Original Montford Point Marines in one year, resulting in Congressional Gold Medal recognition for 11 posthumous recipients and one living Montford Pointer.

Through school presentations, community events, and initiatives preserving the Montford Point Marines’ legacy, Johnny continues to connect their history with new generations. Atlanta Chapter 5 received Chapter of the Year honors at the 59th National Convention in 2024.

Association Membership

Who Is Eligible?

Membership is open to persons serving or who have served honorably or under honorable conditions in the Armed Forces of the United States or its reserve components for at least ninety (90) days, and persons serving or who have served and earned at least ninety (90) reserve retirement credit points.

A service member who meets these requirements may belong to an NMPMA Chapter or Auxiliary, but not both.

Eligible applicants may complete a paper or online application, provide verification of military service, and pay applicable fees. New applicants enter as Annual Members and become eligible for Life Membership after one year of paid annual membership.

Annual Membership

$65

National annual dues, plus local chapter dues

Annual membership expires September 30 of each year, with a 15-day grace period for renewal.

Life Membership

$350

Available after one year of paid annual membership

Pay in full or in installments of $175 within two years after the required year of paid annual membership. The life membership amount is the same regardless of age.

Additional Membership Information

Members at Large

Members at Large are paid national members who live where there is no chapter, elect not to belong to a chapter, and/or have not paid annual chapter dues.

Honorary Membership

Reserved for non-veterans approved by the National Executive Council who have demonstrated unwavering support for the Association. Honorary members have no voting rights at any level and are not included in delegate strength or assessment calculations.

Montford Point Marines

Montford Point Marines do not pay membership dues.

Local chapter dues vary. Contact the local chapter president or representative for the actual amount.

Auxiliary Requirements

Auxiliary Membership

Review the Auxiliary categories and dues below. Contact the Auxiliary membership team to confirm eligibility and application requirements. A Full Member’s sponsor does not have to be an active member of the organization.

Annual Membership

$35

National annual dues, plus local Auxiliary dues

Auxiliary members may apply after at least two consecutive years in good standing without a membership lapse.

Auxiliary Membership Categories

Regular Member

A membership category listed in the Auxiliary bylaws. Contact an Auxiliary representative for eligibility and application details.

Auxiliary Affiliate Member

Formerly known as a member-at-large, an Affiliate Member does not have an Auxiliary where they reside. Affiliate members belong to the geographically closest Auxiliary, receive its regular member services, and vote with that Auxiliary in national and local elections. Local Auxiliary dues are required.

Auxiliary Honorary Member

Honorary membership is reserved for a person distinguished by meritorious community service.

Auxiliary Life Member

A member in good standing for at least two consecutive years without a membership lapse may apply upon payment of the required life membership dues.

Full Member

The member’s sponsor does not have to be an active member of the organization.

Local Auxiliary dues vary by chapter. Contact the local Auxiliary president or representative for the actual amount.
